ALLOPATHIC INTERNAL MEDICINE CURRICULUM

NOTE: This curriculum is a living and changing document that will be updated on a continuous basis. Just as medicine is a dynamic and ever evolving field, we in Graduate Medical Education must be in a state of constant adaptation to innovation, insight and improvement in both the areas of medicine and education. As faculty and residents your insight and contribution are essential to the ongoing evolution of this training curriculum. Please refer to this curriculum frequently, so as to keep up with these changes as they occur.

Overview

During residency with The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education you will develop the skill sets necessary to evolve into a fully prepared internist. Our residents are trained to independently provide excellent care to a diverse patient demographic across a broad spectrum of medical conditions.

Whether you choose to pursue a career path in general internal medicine,  subspecialty medicine or academic medicine, your program is prepared to fulfill your training needs.

Purpose

The purpose of this Residency Curriculum is to provide you with an overview of goals and objectives to be achieved as you progress through training, how these goals and objectives will be achieved, and how your progress through residency training will be evaluated to assure that you maintain the anticipated trajectory in your learning.

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, (ACGME) is the authority that accredits residency programs while the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) certifies the residents. Both the ACGME and the ABIM want a residency program to confirm if, after three years of training, a resident is competent to practice medicine independently. Specifically, the ACGME requires that programs have measurements of certain competency-based outcomes to document that their residents are fully trained physicians capable of independent practice before they recommend that their residents be permitted to take the ABIM Certifying Examination in Internal Medicine.

Each Internal Medicine resident will successfully complete 36 months of training in Internal Medicine rotations as specified by the ABIM certification requirements, the ACGME RRC-IM training program requirements and The Wright Center Internal Medicine Curriculum requirements. The resident will advance each year in training status according to the results of their final annual evaluation. Each resident’s annual summative evaluation will be completed by the Program Director and will be approved by the Clinical Competency Committee in May/June of that year. The summative evaluation is based on a summary of rotation evaluations in the six core competencies, program director observation, file documentation, and achievement of The Wright Center Internal Medicine training objectives for that year of residency. 

Expectations of a Resident

In addition to your rotational learning objectives, the following expectations will apply to you throughout your training at The Wright Center:

  • You will be aware that under the supervision of your attending faculty physician, you are accountable for the care of your patients and for your education and that this will require ongoing highly focused and intensive effort on your part.
  • You will embody the core humanistic values of integrity, caring, compassion, empathy, respect, and trustworthiness. You will remember that you are always an ambassador for The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education and for your profession.
  • You will demonstrate respect and professionalism at all times by being on time and prepared for all clinical and service obligations, for all conferences, seminars, meetings, etc.
  • You will seek feedback, and commit to making changes to improve performance where needed. You will also self-reflect with regard to your skills and behaviors within the framework of the Core Competencies of Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Practice-Based learning and Improvement, Interpersonal and Communications Skills, Professionalism, and Systems Based Practice.
  • You will develop and commit to a reading plan, and to compliance with any medical knowledge training requirements. Medical education is in a continuous state of change and evolution.  Learning is lifelong.
  • You will assure timely attention to all matters regarding employment, including but not limited to HR requirements such as paperwork, surveys etc. You will comply with all credentialing requirements at all clinical learning venues.
  • You will review your rotational curriculum prior to each rotation and you will be responsible for establishing personal learning goals and objectives. These are to be submitted at the beginning of each rotation.  For example: (2) week rotations – learning goals and objectives are due within first two days of rotation, (4) week rotations – learning goals and objectives are due within the first week of rotations.
  • You will attend conferences and seminars, be punctual, and comply with attendance documentation requirements. The minimum requirement for conference attendance is 80% and is a requirement for graduation from the program.
  • You will assist your teammates as needed, and if unable to do so, you will seek help on their behalf.  You will understand everyone’s importance and value within the team.
  • You will have a presence.  For example, wherever possible, you will communicate in person rather than giving orders via phone.
  •  You will assure the timely completion of medical records and evaluations. You will ensure that the patient sign out system is up to date and information is concise for the transition of care between teams.
  • You will adhere to program requirements for documentation of your educational progress in the MyEvaluations.com system including timely submission of duty hours, scholarly activity, portfolio, procedures, etc. You will cooperate fully with any requests or requirements made of you by The Wright Center GME Department as well as any other department of the organization.
  • You will be responsible for completing and submitting the mandatory evaluations at the end of each rotation. You will proactively engage your attending physician to complete required rotational direct observation evaluations.
  • You will ensure your active service on Wright Center and Hospital Committees such as Patient Safety, Credentialing, etc.
  • You will be mindful of quality improvement on every level, and provide feedback to the program to optimize your experience and those of your colleagues.
