A longtime patient of The Wright Center for Community Health, Ellen Walko is an advocate for the Opioid Use Disorder Center of Excellence and knows first-hand the impacts of addiction upon families, as her son struggled with substance use for several years before his passing. Along with her husband, Mike Sr., Ellen helps their daughter, Liz, host the annual Mike’s Masters Memorial Golf Tournament in Taylor to both celebrate Mike Jr.’s life and raise funds to assist people in recovery.
A Carbondale native, Ellen received a bachelor’s degree in communication disorders from Marywood University. She retired in 2014 and lives in Clifford Township with her husband. In her free time, Ellen enjoys volunteering at the St. Francis Community Lunch at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Parish in Carbondale, and at the Little Sisters of the Poor food pantry.
