Former Chair – The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education
Harold W. Baillie, Ph.D., of Clarks Summit, a longtime leader, educator, philosopher, and healthcare ethicist who dedicated his life to service, served on The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education Board of Directors.
Dr. Baillie passed away shortly before The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education’s 2026 commencement ceremony. His loss is deeply felt throughout The Wright Center’s Graduate Medical Education Safety-Net Consortium enterprise and across the many educational, healthcare, and civic institutions he strengthened throughout his distinguished career.
Dr. Baillie served on The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education Board of Directors beginning in 2017 and served as board chair from 2018-2026. During his tenure, he provided steady leadership, thoughtful guidance, and a strong commitment to The Wright Center’s mission to improve the health and welfare of our communities through responsive, whole-person health services for all and the sustainable renewal of an inspired, competent workforce that is privileged to serve.
As The Wright Center experienced significant growth and transformation, Dr. Baillie helped guide the enterprise through opportunities and challenges, including the expansion of community-based healthcare services and the development and opening of The Wright Center for Community Health Wilkes-Barre. His ability to build consensus, encourage collaboration, and keep discussions focused on the greater good strengthened The Wright Center’s ability to serve patients, educate future healthcare professionals, and support healthier communities throughout Northeast Pennsylvania.
Dr. Baillie was a nationally respected scholar, healthcare ethicist, author, and educator. Born in East Orange, New Jersey, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Yale University before completing his master’s and doctoral degrees in philosophy at Boston College.
In 1978, Dr. Baillie joined the faculty of The University of Scranton, where he built a distinguished academic career spanning more than four decades. He served as professor, department chair, associate provost, provost, and vice president for academic affairs. He was selected by students as Teacher of the Year in 1982, and in 1997, students dedicated the university yearbook to him in recognition of his extraordinary impact as an educator.
Throughout his career, Dr. Baillie explored some of society’s most complex ethical questions, with scholarship focused on medical ethics, public health ethics, political philosophy, genetics, and human dignity. He served on ethics committees for healthcare institutions throughout the region, helping clinicians and organizations navigate complex issues involving patient care, healthcare access, end-of-life decisions, and emerging medical technologies.
At the heart of Dr. Baillie’s work was a belief that knowledge carries responsibility and that leadership must be grounded in integrity, compassion, and service. He encouraged others to consider not only what could be done, but what should be done.
His commitment to education and community extended beyond his professional roles. At The University of Scranton, he helped establish and support initiatives that continue to benefit students and the broader community, including the Honesdale National Bank Center for Economic Education, the Leahy Health Clinic, and the Loyola Science Center.
Dr. Baillie also shared his expertise internationally as a visiting professor in countries including China, Slovakia, Georgia, Taiwan, and Lebanon, promoting dialogue on ethics, philosophy, healthcare, and education.
Those who knew Dr. Baillie often remember his character as much as his accomplishments. He was known for his humility, kindness, thoughtful leadership, and genuine respect for others. He listened carefully, mentored generously, and made those around him feel valued.
Dr. Baillie’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his wife, Paula; his children, Lauren, Lindsey, Hal, and Kathleen; and his grandchildren.
