About

Douglas Klamp, M.D., is senior vice president, chief medical education officer, and physician chair of resident and fellow talent acquisition.

Raised in Michigan, Dr. Klamp received his undergraduate degree from the Schreyer Honors College at Penn State and then attended Johns Hopkins School of Medicine where he was elected chapter president of the American Medical Student Association. While at Hopkins, he also co-founded a club called Students for International Health, which invited lecturers to talk with medical students about overseas public health challenges and opportunities. The subject matter was later incorporated into the school’s curriculum. He completed his residency in primary care internal medicine at the Alameda County General Hospital in Oakland, California, in 1991.

Dr. Robert Wright, namesake founder of The Wright Center, recruited Dr. Klamp to move to Northeast Pennsylvania in 1997 to serve as associate program director of the Scranton-Temple Residency Program.

For Dr. Klamp, part of the allure was that he also would be the founding medical director of the startup Scranton Temple Health Center, in which the residency program’s physician trainees then performed all of their outpatient services.

He would later leave The Wright Center to pursue other objectives, including serving as medical director of the McGowan Institute for Health Community Initiatives of the Mercy Foundation, where he directed an eating disorder coalition and prison outreach efforts, and coordinated a cardiovascular disease prevention program.  Board-certified in Internal Medicine, he then ran a private practice in Scranton for about 17 years, before rejoining The Wright Center’s nonprofit enterprise in 2020 as physician faculty, once again serving as associate program director of our Internal Medicine Residency Program.  In 2021, he became physician lead for resident and fellow recruitment at The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education. As chief medical education officer, he now helps ensure quality education in all our training programs. Dr. Klamp currently serves as program director of the internal medicine residency.
